While this cemetery used to be approached from River Road, the old road has been flooded by beavers, causing the crossing to be dangerous, even on foot. It would be best to approach this cemetery from the old Mountain Road in the Lowell E. Barnes Wildlife Management Area. The cemetery is on a raised area between the old road and the beaver pond, with two headstones lying on the ground. GPS is recommended.
Historical Information: This cemetery contains the graves of Henry W. Barnes and his wife Betsy (Wadsworth) Barnes, who appear on the censuses near this cemetery by 1820. Betsey was officially given the 100 acres by her father, Capt. Charles Lee Wadsworth, in 1834. Henry and Betsey’s sons, Augustus and Franklin, later owned the land.
Although there is room for a couple more people to be buried in the cemetery, there is no indication of any other graves.
Condition (10/31/20): The two headstones are badly broken and lying flat on the ground. The site is not marked or maintained and is in danger of being lost.
