AKA Clemons Homestead Cemetery
Location: 43.87658 -70.86561
From its intersection with Notch Road, drive southeast on Bray Ridge Road 0.65 miles to a fork. Park and proceed southeast up the right fork on foot, past the last house, then 200 yards further east before turning south on a logging road for 60 yards. The cemetery is on a hill and the perimeter is marked with flagging tape. GPS is recommended.
Historical Information: Jonathan was the son of the first Clemons in Hiram: John and Abigail (Southwick) Clemons. On his gravestone is the poignant epitaph: “The land I cleared is now my grave.” Along with Jonathan are also buried his son Samuel, and his daughter-in-law Hannah (Fox) Clemons, wife of Daniel L. There is an extra grave depression in this cemetery without a headstone. This could be for Jonathan’s wife Hannah (Lane) Clemons, who died after 1870.
Jonathan Clemons’ homestead farm was given to his son Daniel L. with the stipulation that he care for Jonathan and Hannah in Hiram until their deaths. Daniel sold the land to Stephen P. Fox on 11/6/1873, so it is probable that Hannah died prior to that date. Daniel and his second wife, Ruth (Hartford) Clemons, moved to Porter after selling the Hiram farm. This cemetery is not mentioned in any deeds of sale, though the nearby Sargent Cemetery is.
Condition (10/18/2020): This area has recently been logged, with care taken to avoid the cemetery. Two of the three headstones are broken and on the ground. Hannah’s stone has been damaged by at least two gunshots in the past.
