Danforth Cemetery

Danforth Cemetery

Location: 43.86908 -70.96949

From its intersection with Kennard Hill Road, drive northeast on Danforth Lane for 0.25 miles until it ends. The cemetery is in the woods to the east of the house. There are about six graves marked with rough fieldstones on a hill, no enclosure.

Historical Information:  Ezekial Danforth is shown living near the cemetery on the 1840 and 1850 censuses. He and his wife, Hannah (Day) had died by the 1860 census, as had Hannah’s mother, Lucy Day. They could be three of the burials in the cemetery.

The property subsequently went to Ezekial’s son, Ivory Danforth, who owned the property until he gave it to his son, Ezra in 1902. Ezra Danforth married Lillian Fannie (Day). Their daughter Fannie married Joseph Oliver Martell. It is their infant son who is known to be buried in this cemetery. Stanley Brothers Funeral Home records show that Robert Martell, son of Oliver and Fannie (Danforth) Martell, was born 5/12/1939 and died 5/13/1939. It is unknown which grave is his and who else is buried in the cemetery.

Condition (9/1/19):  Most people would not recognize this as a cemetery. Many of the fieldstones have sunk and are barely showing. Fortunately the current landowner knows where it is and is protecting the site.
