Floyd Cemetery

Floyd Cemetery

Location: 43.87980 -70.96027

From its intersection with Phen Hill Road, walk (or drive with a 4WD vehicle) south 1 mile on Old County Road/Breakneck Road. The stone-walled cemetery is on the left (east) side, about 200 feet off the road. There are at least three graves marked with fieldstones.

Historical Information:  Jacob and Ira Floyd both are shown living near the cemetery on the 1858 map of Porter. They were the youngest two sons of Henry Floyd, who lived at the corner of Breakneck Hill Road and Moody Road.

Jacob Floyd (b. 11/2/1812, d.10/8/1878) was first married to Catherine Kennard. She died around 1849. By around 1852 he had married Mary A. Kennard, daughter of Noah and Polly Kennard. From census records it appears they had multiple children who died young. Jacob, his wives and his young children are not listed as being buried anywhere else, so may be in this cemetery.

Ira Floyd (b.10/12/1815, d. 11/3/1862) was first married to Sally Stanley. She died around 1857. On 10/28/1858 Ira married Sally (Brooks) Quint, daughter of John and Sally Brooks and widow of John Quint. She had two children from her first marriage: William Wallace and Mary J. From records it appears that Ira had children from both marriages that died young. Ira contracted typhoid while a soldier in the Civil War and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. His wives and children are not listed as being buried in any other cemetery, so may be here.

Condition (5/2/20): The boundaries of this cemetery were respected during a recent logging of the area. The inside of the cemetery is overgrown.
