From its intersection with Colcord Pond Road, drive south, then east, then south again on Gilman Road for 0.4 miles. The cemetery is on the left (east) side of the road, surrounded by a stone wall. Many of the older stones have been replaced with newer monuments. Note: Part of Gilman Road is unmaintained in the winter.
Historical Information: John French settled just north of this cemetery in 1794. He and his wife, Sally (Trefen) French, and some of their children, are buried here. One of their daughters, Lucy, married Jesse Bickford and continued living on the home farm. Their daughter, Veldima, married W. Frank Gilman.
See Burch’s “Cemeteries of the Town of Porter, Maine” for more genealogical information as well as possible identities of fieldstone-marked graves.
Condition (9/15/19): This cemetery is nicely mowed. At some point someone tried to repair some of the broken stones with metal bars and bolts, which caused further damage. The old stones were then discarded along the north wall of the cemetery and replaced with new monuments. These monuments do not contain the detail and information that the old ones had.
