Location: Probably a typo.
Shirley Welch in 1987 lists it as “a small cemetery near the Hiram-Brownfield town line, it sits high on a bank, is fenced in, and in fairly good condition.” This was probably meant to describe the Hartford Cemetery, which was sometimes erroneously referred to as the Hartford-Powers Cemetery.
Historical Information:
Most of the burials on the list for this cemetery (Howards) are actually in Burnt Meadow Cemetery. In Teg’s History of Brownfield, it states that these specific Howards used to be in the “Howard Burying Grounds” which is now known as Burnt Meadow Brook Cemetery. If this is meant to suggest that Burnt Meadow Brook Cemetery started with the Howard family, that is false.
This line could also mean that the graves were located somewhere else and moved to Burnt Meadow later. However, the Howard burials are in three separate sections of the cemetery, not together. One of the sections is a raised plot for Hon. Joseph Howard, Moses Howard and their wives. All four have individual tablet stones as well as having their names on the center monument. On the back of the monument is the name Powers and the back half of the raised plot has no stones in it. The Eli Bean records indicate that James Powers (a Civil War Soldier), his wife Bridget Bogan Powers, and their children Orlando, Susan, Virene and Frank are buried here. The James Powers homestead was located on the northeast side of Rattlesnake (Pequawket) Pond on the north side of Wakefield Road at 43.91351, -70.84187. The Howard and Powers families were linked by marriage.
