From its intersection with Colcord Pond Road, drive south on Gilman Road 250 yards. Walk west 100 yards to the top of a wooded hill. The cemetery is enclosed by a stone wall and is relatively large at 70’x70′. There are three gravesites in the far corner, one marked with a slate stone and two marked with fieldstones.
Historical Information: James Libby was the son of Hanson and Lydia Libby, who were later buried at their farm on Libby Hill. No more information was found about James or his possible service in the War of 1812.
It is possible that the two fieldstone graves are for John and his wife Eleanor (Berry) Libby, parents of Meshach and Stephen Libby, first settlers of Porter. In the “History of Porter” by Thomas Moulton, John Libby and his wife were buried on their farm on the Colcord Pond Road, near the intersection of Gilman and Mason Roads. They were buried a few rods west of their house. Depending on the exact location, this could describe this cemetery or perhaps the Meshach Libby Cemetery just north of here.
Condition (9/15/19): This cemetery is in a completely wooded area. Many trees also grow inside the large cemetery. There appear to only be three graves in the northwest corner. James’ stone is in good condition but is leaning.
