Location: Exact location unknown. The cemetery is in the southern half of Lot 3 G Range in the corner of the town of Porter. It most likely was near the John Poor house, which still stands today at the northeast corner of Route 160 and Ten Mile Brook Road.
Historical Information:
John Poor was born in Brownfield, the son of William and Anna (Travis) Poor. His gravestone says that he died January 9, 1848 at age 37 years, though census records and Ancestry.com trees indicate a birthdate of December 10, 1807. John was married to Eliza Ann and together they had three children by the 1840 census. Another son, John, died September 15, 1846 at age 3 years. After John Poor’s death, Eliza moved to Biddeford then married George Remick and lived in Parsonsfield then Massachusetts. In 1870 she was living with her newly married daughter Lillie, who was born in 1847.
This cemetery was first mentioned in the deeds on March 29, 1852 when George B. Hartford quitclaimed to Eliza Ann Remick (formerly Poor) the parcel of land with buildings, “reserving the burying ground where John Poor was buried two rods wide and extending back as far as said Poor was buried” (Book 34, Page 119). This burying ground continued to be reserved in the deeds through 1876 when Moses B. Robbins bought the surrounding property; however, by the time he sold his many lots in 1921, it was no longer mentioned.
The gravestones for John Poor and his son John Poor are now located in Pine Grove Cemetery in Brownfield. They are in an older section towards the front of the cemetery where there are many unmarked graves. There is no sign of where the graves were originally located.
