Historical Information: From Burch’s “Cemeteries of the Town of Porter, Maine”: “Henri Raffy was born in Agent, France in the French Pyrenees. He served with distinction in the French Forces during WWI. Katherine Foote Raffy was born in Boston, Mass. the daughter of famed composer Arthur Foote. She was a trained pianist, a concert artist, but gave up her career to help in the war effort during WWI by becoming a nurse. The Raffys met in a French soldiers’ hospital and were married in Constantinople in 1921. During and after WWII the Raffys sent some 800 bundles of food and clothing to French orphans and war refugees and sent to France the materials and money needed to support 4 war orphans they adopted. In 1950 Henri was awarded the “French Legion of Honor” by the French Government for exemplary service during WWI and outstanding relief work during WWII. Katherine was awarded the French Medal of Honor in 1952.”

The Raffys bought #1002 Colcord Pond Road in 1925 and completely renovated it.

Henri and Katherine’s names are also inscribed on Arthur Foote’s monument in Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA.
