From its intersection with Burnt Meadow Road, drive south on 160 2.3 miles to #679 on the right (west) side of the road. The cemetery is in the woods about 165 feet north of the house. All that remains of this good-sized cemetery are granite posts and many large grave depressions. Many of the graves were moved to Pine Grove and some were moved to Spring Cemetery in Hiram. Others are unaccounted for.
Historical Information:
It appears that the graves in this cemetery were moved later than many of the others (1950s/60s?) though it is unknown why. The site is undeveloped and all of the granite posts still stand. It seems to be a good location for a cemetery.
There are two plots in the newer section of Pine Grove that contains the gravestones of some of the people on the Stuart Cemetery list. In Section 7, Row 4, Lot 3 there are six original-looking gravestones. In Section 10, Row 2, Lot 1 there are two gravestones as well as miscellaneous footstones that belong to other people who were buried in the Stuart Cemetery. Their headstones are in different parts of Pine Grove. This indicates that the moving process was much less than perfect.
Others on the Stuart Cemetery list now have gravestones, either original or inscribed on new monuments, amongst already existing family plots in Pine Grove. Members of the McLucas family were moved to Spring Cemetery in Hiram. The only people on the Stuart list not represented anywhere are Susan Anderson (daughter of V. Timothy) and James Hartford (son of John and Eliza Hartford).
Old records refer to this cemetery as being on the Roscoe Lord place. When he bought the property in 1911 the cemetery lot was mentioned (Book 103, Page 21).
In the 1911-1912 Brownfield Annual Report, Article 28 was “To see if the town will vote to fence the John Stuart Cemetery, or burial ground, so called, and raise money for the same.” It looks like this article probably passed because there are nice granite posts surrounding the cemetery.
Condition (5/13/18):
Granite posts still mark the perimeter of this cemetery. There are no headstones visible. Most likely some graves still remain, especially since old records indicate there were many graves that did not have headstones.
